Environmental Policy

Slieve Aughty Centre and the Environment

Hotels and Guest Houses are major polluters, and we feel we have a responsibility to minimise our impact on the environment. We believe that it is possible to provide rich experiences for guests with less waste, no harmful chemicals and kindness to people and animals.

In 2010 we will be applying for the EU Flower, a European standard awarded to environmentally friendly businesses in the tourism industry (for more information visit www.ecolabel-tourism.eu). This is the only sign of environmental quality both certified by an independent organization (N.S.A.I.) and valid throughout Europe. We are constantly improving our environmental practices to minimise our carbon footprint as much as possible.

Actions we have already taken to minimize our impact on the environment:

  • All food waste and waste office paper is composted.
  • All garden waste is composted.
  • Cardboard packaging, newspapers, magazines, glass, cans, plastic and used light bulbs and batteries are all returned for recycling.
  • We use a natural puraflo peat moss treatment system which purifies all wastewater generated by the guest house, chalets and restaurant.
  • Water is sourced from a well on the property. We also harvest rainwater for use in the stables and garden.
  • Most vegetables and fruits are grown organically on the property. Eggs and jam are purchased locally. In 2010, all food that is not grown organically on the property will be sourced from local producers whenever possible. This will minimise fuel used for shipping food and supports the local economy.
  • Several acres of our bog land are designated as a Special Protection Area for the hen harrier, a threatened bird of prey. Rare bog plants and hedgerows are preserved as hen harriers habitat.
  • No chemicals are used in the garden or on grazing land.
  • All detergents and cleaners are eco-friendly, do not contaminate the water supply and biodegrade.
  • Two chalets, built in 2007, were constructed with old timber, roof and brick from our old guest house. Dining room furniture was made with timber from the old guest house as well.
  • Energy efficient bulbs are used in all lighting fixtures.
  • We support environmentally sustainable tourism by encouraging guests to walk or cycle while staying at the Centre. Bicycles and clear, laminated maps are available for guest use, including a self-guided nature trail. Walking and cycling holidays are promoted.
  • School tours at the Centre promote environmental awareness with a nature trail and eco-logic programme.
  • Yearly forest clean-up.
